Walkway lights

With optimally placed path lights, you not only create a fantastic lighting ambience in your outdoor area, but also improve orientation in the dark and thus ensure more safety. Path lights are not only used for the basic lighting of outdoor areas, but you can also set elegant light accents with them. Find out more about the technology and possible uses of modern lights for paths, streets and paths in the following article.

What types of path lights are there?

The manufacturers of lamps and lights offer a huge range of different shapes. We distinguish path lights according to the following styles:

Floor lamps and floor lamps

This is the classic shape of path lights. The models usually have a base in the form of a stele or column. The light element is located on it, which is usually protected from rain and snow by a small roof. The light is thus emitted in all directions below the roof, but not upwards.

downlights

Downlights are like small spotlights that focus the light directly onto the path. The light cone is rather small with these lights. Used correctly, this form of path lights ensures precise accent lighting. Distribute the lights carefully and interestingly to avoid associations with a runway.

bollard lights

Shaped as columns or steles, bollard lights illuminate your path and the surrounding areas of the property. Depending on the design, the lights radiate 360° or only in a certain direction. Often the bulb is not visible in the bollard, so the light is emitted indirectly. Like downlights, bollards require wide spacing to avoid over-lighting and are great for wide pathways and open spaces.

recessed lights

If lights are integrated in the path itself or in an adjacent wall, this arrangement has a particularly high-quality effect. However, this does not give you flexibility and the technology has to be installed during the construction phase. Flush recessed step lights ensure a special level of safety.

What criteria should be considered when selecting path lights?

You should pay special attention to the design, since path lights can also be seen in daylight. This allows you to use the lights as an additional eye-catcher on your property. When making your selection, make sure that they harmonize with the style concept of your outdoor area. Our huge range will surely help you to find a stylish model.

Light, height and beam angle:

Brightly shining path lights are more for a reduced and spacious environment. With narrow paths and lush plantings, muted and warmly glowing variants are more pleasant. Depending on the model, path lights have a more or less high body. This is responsible for the width of the light cone and the lighting effect that emanates from your path light. You can illuminate paths with a variety of different lights. In addition to floor lamps, bollard lamps or pedestal lamps are particularly popular, as these are usually between 60 cm and 120 cm high and are already an eye-catcher due to their size. If you want to achieve an even broader lighting effect, you should think about using mast lights. The mast light exceeds the height of pedestal lights or candelabra and is almost reminiscent of street lamps. If you prefer to use path lights for orientation in the dark and less as a representative light source, then marker lights with a lower brightness could be the best option for you. These are generally close to the ground and no higher than 60 cm.

Power supply:

When it comes to power supply, you basically have four options: solar, battery, low voltage or mains voltage. Solar lights can be set up in no time. Simply stick these into the ground in a suitable sunny spot and wait for the sun to set. However, the light output is low and the lights are used more for orientation and less for lighting. Battery-powered models are just as flexible as the solar lights. Reliability and performance depend on the current battery charge level. Low voltage lighting comes with transformer and is more reliable. However, the installation requires the laying of underground cables. For the basic supply of electricity, a socket with mains voltage is usually required. Cables must also be laid for path lights with mains voltage supply. In principle, however, these represent a solid and durable alternative to the other variants and therefore form the most extensive product group here in the shop.

TIP

When laying cables outdoors, special attention must be paid to safety. Have this work carried out by an experienced electrician and only use suitable cables. Use waterproof gel sleeves for connections.

Assembly:

There are different installation options for path lights depending on the design. The assembly is partly dependent on the power supply. Solar lights and battery-powered lights are usually intended for flexible use. These can be easily stuck into the ground with a skewer or placed directly on the ground. Such lights can be removed or repositioned without tools. A permanent mounting option is the concrete foundation. Path lights with a concrete foundation are particularly robust and can easily withstand strong winds and other influences. All wired lights should be fixed as solidly as possible. This is primarily for security. It quickly happens that a person or the robotic lawnmower accidentally bumps into it. If the attachment is not sufficient, connections can quickly be damaged in these cases and open contacts can occur. You do not want to use lights with a concrete foundation, but still want a stationary and stable installation? Then you can use screw-on path lights. These models are installed on stone slabs on paths and terraces.

Optical highlights

Better built-in than free-standing: Some path lights can be recessed into the ground along the path or built into walls, posts or steps.

bulbs:

The majority of our range is equipped with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LED bulbs are energy efficient and emit very little heat. LEDs consume significantly less electricity than conventional incandescent lamps or halogen lamps for the same amount of light. Their durability and service life is also many times over. In addition to high energy efficiency and a longer service life, another major advantage of LED lamps is that they produce fewer emissions, contain no lead or mercury and therefore emit fewer toxic gases and CO₂. The LED bulbs of a well-designed path lighting give the night view of your path or driveway a very special charm. You will also occasionally find models with conventional light sources here in the shop.

As you can see, there are many options for path lighting. Your choice depends on the environment, the technology and the complexity of the installation.

Finally, two tips

If you want to light a path, you almost always need more than one light. It can therefore be advantageous to use a set. If your preferred model is not available in a set, you are welcome to send us an inquiry. Depending on the manufacturer and the purchase quantity, graduated prices may be negotiable.

Path lights with replaceable light sources can be equipped with modern LED torches. These simulate a play of flames and have a particularly romantic effect both in summer and in winter

You can get pedestal lights and path lights in the eibabo® range at reasonable prices. Well-known manufacturers of high-quality lights include Zumtobel, Trilux, Theben, Opple Lightning, Eglo, Siedle, Steinel, SLV, EVN and many others.
