Drive head - hinge switch - A hinge switch is a type of safety lock that can be attached to the hinge of a door or flap, for example. Such a switch performs the function of a classic hinge and is additionally connected to the power supply. This makes it possible, for example, to increase the safety of operating personnel within industrial manufacturing processes. If, as described above, a flap or a door is opened, the hinge switch can interrupt the power supply to a machine located behind it and thus switch it off. How and in what form a hinge switch is triggered can be determined individually. For this purpose, the opening angle of the hinge is fixed or drive heads with roller or swivel levers are used. You can get all the components for manufacturing a safety hinge circuit quickly and inexpensively here in the eibabo online shop.Catalogue content:In this eibabo® catalogue Sensors > Drive head for position switches/hinge switches you will find items from the following product groups:Item overview:Accessories for limit switchesAccessories for position switchesAccessories for safety limit switchesAccessories for safety position switchesActuating rodAdjustment roller leverCross roller tappetDrive head for limit switchesDrive head for position switchDrive head for position switch/hinge switchDrive head for position switches/hinge switchesEnd switchHinge switchPlungerPosition switchPowerheadReplacement power headRod leverRoller camRotary drive headRotary leverRounded tappetSpring barSpring leverSpring rod headSpring-rodSquare roller leverSwing leverfrom the following manufacturers:Manufacturer overview catalogue Drive head - hinge switch:EatonSchmersalSchneider ElectricSiemens
Blind switch-push button - Do you have numerous windows and would like to operate your blinds or roller shutters easily and conveniently at the push of a button? No problem. If your shading has drive motors, you can easily control the up and down with a blind switch. With blind switches from the eibabo® shop, you can dispense with the hassle of manually opening and closing and equip your building with a high-quality electric blind control. If you want it to be particularly convenient, then products from our smart home range might also be an option for you. Talk to us, we are specialists in the field of building automation.Image: Busch Jaeger 2000/4 US shutter switch insertWhat are blind switches?Blind switches or buttons for roller shutters are components for controlling blinds and roller shutters. However, it is also possible to connect drives for opening and closing awnings, roller shutters and similar things. The polarity is reversed by operating the respective rocker switches or buttons or by turning a toggle or a key in different directions. This causes the actuator or motor to be controlled in two different directions. Please noteYou cannot use a normal switch to control blinds. In the case of blind buttons or blind switches, the control is interlocked. This means that there can be either only the up command or the down command. Simultaneous actuation in both directions is not possible. In addition to the simple switches and buttons, models with a latching function, rotary key switches, variants with remote control or radio control and devices with a bus connection for home automation are also available. The switches for surface mounting and flush mounting are also available.Special features of the classic roller shutter switchThe classic among roller shutter switches looks like a light switch. Installed in a conventional switch box or surface-mounted, operation is usually carried out using two buttons (up button and down button) or a two-way button. Normally you have to press the respective button until the desired position of the shading is reached. The motor stops when a button is released. The same applies to the rocker switch with the two-way button. With a latching switch, you press the button for the corresponding direction and the motor opens or closes the shade to the end position. If you want to stop this process, you can do so using a stop function. This is triggered by pressing it again or in the opposite direction.Special features of a rotary switch / toggle switch for blinds and roller shuttersTechnically, the rotary switch is identical to the classic roller shutter switch. The difference lies in the operation. With these models, you turn the so-called knob to the left or right to determine the direction in which the motor runs. Here, too, you have the choice between models with a locking function or variants in which you have to hold the toggle in the desired position.qualityAll blind switches in the eibabo® technology store come from well-known manufacturers such as Berker, Gira, Somfy, Jung, Siemens, Hager and Busch Jaeger. We regularly use this high-quality branded product in our own projects.Special features of a key switch for blinds and roller shuttersA key switch is rarely used in private rooms. In publicly accessible areas, however, the rotary key switch offers effective protection against use by unauthorized persons. A key is required for operation, which is turned in the lock to the left or right for the desired direction. Here, too, a snap-in function is optionally possible. Such a switch is usually surrounded by a solid metal housingAdvantages and disadvantages of manual blind controlThis purely mechanical type of control is comparatively simple and works depending on the type of shading:by means of a rotatable shaft, which is manually driven by a torsion bar or a crankpurely due to the gravity of the roller shutters or awnings - often a belt causes the shading to be lowered and pulled up The systems are robust and mostly low-maintenance. In comparison to the automatic solution, it is operated entirely without electricity. The shading can thus be controlled independently of existing lines or the availability of electricity. In addition, this variant is easier to install. No cables need to be laid. Manual control is usually cheaper than automatic control. With a manual blind control, it is not possible to group several shadings and regulate them together. Each window must be adjusted individually. It is also not possible to open or close according to a predetermined time setting, the position of the sun or the wind load.Advantages and disadvantages of an electric blind controlThe main advantage of the electrified blind control is the increased comfort. The basic functionality is identical to manual control. But instead of having to turn the crank, you can simply open and close your shading with the push of a button. With appropriate cabling, several windows can be operated simultaneously, but not independently of each other. The disadvantages are the higher installation costs and the dependence on electricity. In the event of a power failure, it is generally not possible to move the shading. The electrical control forms the basis for automating the system. However, this is not yet a 'real' automation. This offers even more comfort.Advantages and disadvantages of automatic blind controlThere are countless ways to respond to personal needs or environmental influences with automatic control. With the term 'Smart Home' we describe the automation of buildings or apartments in which all technical communication is combined in a single network. With sensors and actuators, the intelligent house handles many processes independently, including the control of roller shutters, awnings, roller shutters and blinds:With light sensors, the shading is regulated automatically depending on the intensity of the natural light and the direction of the sun's rays.Temperature sensors set the shading in motion as soon as the temperature in the room rises above a set value.Timers ensure automatic timing.Weather stations and precipitation sensors react to wind and rain, retract the shading and protect it from damage.  TIPThe automated blind control can be wired or wireless, so the control can be central, decentralized or remote. This maximum level of comfort and flexibility is offset by higher installation costs for actuators, sensors and other software and hardware. In addition, when selecting wired devices, it is necessary to provide a separate data line. As a layman, you usually have to consult a specialist for the basic setup of the network. When the system is running, a lot of energy can also be saved with optimized processes. Installing automated shutters and blinds is a trendsetting way to control lighting in apartments and houses. This saves time, effort and energy. If you are interested in building automation, you will find everything you need here in the eibabo® shop.  Catalogue content:In this eibabo® catalogue Domestic switching devices > Venetian blind switch/-push button you will find items from the following product groups:Item overview:Awning switchBlind buttonBlind controlControl unitDouble blind buttonEngine control unitGroup buttonGroup switchHome automationIndividual controlIndoor sun protectionInstallation buttonInstallation switchInterior blind controlKey switchManufactureNostalgia switchRademacherReversing buttonRocker switchSeries switchSun protection controlSwitchSwitch buttonSwitch power supplySwitch rangeTitle blockToggle switchfrom the following manufacturers:Manufacturer overview catalogue Blind switch-push button:BerkerBusch JaegerElsoGiraHagerHHGJungLegrand BticinoLegrand SEKOMertenOBOPehaRademacherSiemensSomfy
Switch actuator - Do switch actuators only differ in the number of channels? If you would like to know what you should consider before buying a switch actuator, we have put together some helpful information for you in the following article. The possibilities are therefore very extensive and actuators from the eibabo® range take on very central control and switching functions. But what exactly does that mean? We clarify.Briefly summarizedSwitch actuators are components of modern building automation. You can plan these in the new building, retrofit them in the old building and use them flexibly if you are renting. It is possible to digitally network and switch almost all devices and components of building technology.Switch actuators are parameterized with the standardized ETS software.Private areas of application are, for example, switching operations on lamps, sockets, household appliances, entertainment devices and kitchen appliances. In the commercial sector, for example, you switch access systems, escalators, revolving doors and so on.   How does a KNX switch actuator work?Every bus system consists of actuators and sensors. KNX actuators are active switching elements or drive elements and are comparable to a conventional relay in which the coil is intelligently controlled by bus signals. This converts analogue or digital input signals into switching commands or drive commands. The KNX switching actuator also has its own intelligence in the form of a controller, the so-called 'KNX bus coupler'. You can recognize this controller by the red/black clamp. What types of installation are available for KNX switching actuators?KNX actuators are often also referred to as actuators or binary outputs. A distinction is made between classic switching actuators, dimming actuators, blind actuators, roller shutter actuators, heating actuators, analogue actuators and many others. There are actuators for installation in the electrical distribution, then you have the suffix 'REG' for modular installation device. Flush mount versions are labeled 'UP' for mounting in a mounting box or junction box. As a built-in version for integration in ducts or similar, 'EB' is specified as the mounting type. However, additional protection must also be taken into account for built-in versions depending on the installation. The advantages of switching actuatorsEverything under control ? anytime and anywhere. Single-family houses or apartment buildings, an office building or other real estate can have complex structures. With switching actuators, you simplify the organization of recurring processes and at the same time ensure that nothing is forgotten, no errors occur and, ideally, time and energy are saved. For example, you can adapt your building's access system to office hours or make the heating output dependent on the prevailing outside temperature. Or use the option of being able to operate doors, gates or windows at the same time. This ensures safety, especially in commercial properties, and saves the facility manager a great deal of time. All switching actuators work efficiently and silently. You are free to choose the type of control. This can be done via buttons, remote controls, voice controls, via the Internet or using a smartphone app.Classic application examples in everyday lifeAllow tradesmen access to the building even when you are not on site. Automatically open all escape routes in case of danger or control your children's TV times. In conjunction with motion sensors or presence detectors, doors can be opened and closed or security lighting activated. As you can see, with a little creativity, the possible uses of a KNX switching actuator are almost endless.Image: KNX switch actuator ? Eibmarkt SA.12.16In order to be able to use this potential optimally, it is necessary to know the extensive technical requirements. Which switching actuator do I need for my project and how do I avoid purchasing an unsuitable switching actuator? At eibabo® you will find actuators from brands such as ABB, Berker, Busch-Jaeger, Eaton, EIBMARKT, Eltako, Gira, Hager, Jung, Lingg & Janke, MDT, Merten, Siemens and Theben. Depending on their specifications, they are used for various automation systems. More detailed information can be obtained directly from the product. All KNX actuators offered by eibabo® are of the highest quality and can be purchased by both private and corporate customers. Delivery is worldwide. What questions should I ask myself before starting the project?Do I install one device or several? Will more devices be added later? What electrical loads and types of loads can be expected, especially when switching on?How should the control be operated - via app, voice and / or button? Are the devices switched individually or in groups?Which logic should the switching actions follow?and much more... ...accordingly, I have to consider the following thingsthe suitability of the planned or already installed cables and linescircuit protectionthe space required in the electrical distribution systemthe type, number and distribution of control elements ? for example buttonsand much more... Which KNX switching actuator do I need for my project?KNX actuators can be single-channel or multi-channel. For this reason, actuators can switch at least one or more different equipment such as lights, sockets or motors. There are also decisive differences between the manufacturers with regard to the software / application and the technical application. These include, for example, the integrated logics (e.g. staircase lighting function, delay functions, logic functions), the load capacity of the switching channels (6A, 10A, 16A) and the load type (resistive load, inductive load or capacitive load). Each switching actuator is optimized for its respective area of application. The tasks of a heating actuator, for example, are linked to different parameters than those of a universal switching actuator. Everyone has their specific application / software. This eibabo® catalog is about the classic switch actuator. For additional information on heating actuators, shutter actuators or dimming actuators, please use the search function in our shop. NOTE:The application (software) of each actuator determines its special properties. There are also differences in terms of functionality and expandability. Some models are designed as switch actuator main modules. These can later be supplemented with switching actuator extensions via jumper plugs and thus flexibly adapted to loads to be switched in the future.recommendationDownload the descriptions and the application for the desired actuators from the manufacturer's website and compare the specifications.Good planning is therefore a prerequisite. Only when you know what you want to switch with the required actuator can you choose a device that best meets your needs. Is the resilience of an actuator important? When selecting the right actuators, you should pay attention to the required loads on the one hand and the desired functional options that an actuator can offer on a manufacturer-specific basis on the other. Under no circumstances should you, for example, use an actuator with a maximum load capacity of 6A resistive load and 3A for capacitive loads for switching fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts, since these devices have very high inrush currents (up to 100 A for 3-5ms) for a short time. This can lead to the contacts sticking together. For such loads, it is advisable to use C-load actuators.Does it make sense to use a very heavy duty actuator for very light loads? Please try to select the performance of your actuator as precisely as possible based on your needs. Very low loads on very heavy-duty C-load contacts can lead to wear because the self-cleaning effect no longer occurs. Actuators with a high load capacity of the channels also often require more robust relays with audible switching actions. This should be taken into account in particular when electrical distribution boards are installed in the vicinity of living spaces. TIP:Always choose a switching actuator with regard to its performance to match the respective installation. This protects the technology and extends the service life. In the smart home area, multi-channel 10-16 ampere actuators for resistive loads are used most frequently. Can I connect different phases to the KNX switching actuator?Yes, you can connect different phases to the switching actuator, provided each channel is available separately on the device. In the case of devices with separate potential-free switching contacts, the different phases can be switched next to one another. Different residual current circuit breakers per channel are also possible. In contrast to this, however, operation with different voltages within an actuator is by no means permissible. How do I define the individual switching parameters on the switching actuator? At this point, many interested parties become pensive and begin to doubt whether they can 'program' a switching actuator themselves. It's actually not that difficult. The Engineering Tool Software (ETS) required for this is not really used for programming, but only the group addresses and parameters are assigned to the device. What does ETS mean for KNX?The engineering tool software is a necessary tool for configuring the functions when commissioning KNX devices. The software is only used for parameterization and can also be understood by laypersons with an interest in the logic of the KNX.Programming knowledge is not required and you do not need to know any programming language. If you are interested in the rather simple logical connections of the KNX bus, you are quite capable of creating a project. Of course, more complex concepts require a certain amount of experience. We always recommend having the basic project created by an experienced system integrator. This gives you the option of later changing important parameters yourself very easily if this becomes necessary due to changes in everyday life. What is the difference between binary input and binary output?Switch actuators are also referred to as binary outputs. This designation is not wrong, because these are components that actually switch the connected electrical equipment like a classic light switch - often centrally in the control cabinet. Binary inputs, on the other hand, do not switch the current, but only pass on the signals from conventional operating devices to the KNX system for further processing in a logic module or other KNX participants.  Catalogue content:In this eibabo® catalogue Installation bus systems > Switch actuator for bus system you will find items from the following product groups:Item overview:Adapter plugBasic moduleBlind controlCommand devicesDrive controlElectric infrared heatingEnergy measurementGarage doorHand controlLatching switchOutdoor areaRadio controlRadio systemRelay switchResponse delayShutter outputShutter switchSocket coverSplash proofStaircaseSun protectionSwitch socketSwitching actuator moduleSwitching deviceVentilation controlWipe-offWipe-onWireless switching outputfrom the following manufacturers:Manufacturer overview catalogue Switch actuator:ABBBerkerBusch JaegerEatonEberleEIBMARKTElsnerElsoEltakoESYLUXFinderfrogblue AGGiraHagerIssendorffJungLegrand SEKOLingg & JankeMDTMean WellMertenPehaRutenbeckSchneider ElectricSiemensThebenVaillantWaremaWielandZumtobel
Charging device e-mobility - How do I charge an electrically powered car, motorcycle, bicycle, scooter or skateboard? Which charging station is the right one for my vehicle? Find out here which requirements must be met for the installation of a charging station. We support you in the purchase decision and clarify frequently asked questions. Charging stations for electromobility are an investment in the future. The demand for electric vehicles is constantly increasing. Soon they will account for a massive share of the new vehicle market. Now is the ideal time to invest in charging stations. While the cost of electric vehicles is falling, the range is constantly increasing. This means that more and more people will be able to drive their entire journey in an electric vehicle. The increase in electric vehicles is also associated with an increased need for charging stations. If you would like to charge your vehicles at home or at work in the future, you will find suitable offers for high-quality charging stations in the eibabo® shop with which you can maintain your electric mobility. What is a charging station?A charging station connects electric vehicles to a power source. These are mostly electric cars. In the private sphere, such a device is also called a wall box. This provides the energy required to charge a battery. A distinction is made between AC chargers and DC fast charging stations. You can only charge a battery with direct current. The electricity from the socket is available as alternating current. For this reason, most electric vehicles have their own charger or charging cable with rectifier. This converts the alternating current into direct current. DC quick chargers are mainly found in public spaces. These enable charging with higher power. The direct current is supplied directly to the battery. The vehicle's converter is bypassed. There are simple and inexpensive models, but also extensively equipped variants. Some have smart meters, connectivity to cellular networks, or internet access. TIP:Many charging stations have a residual current circuit breaker. This saves you the cost of an external residual current device. The eibabo® shop not only has charging stations for electric cars, but also for electric bicycles. Why should I invest in a charging station?More and more people own an electric car. If you invest in a charging station, you can use it in your private environment or, for example, offer it to the residents of your building as a landlord. In private use, you make yourself independent of public charging stations. You determine the cost of charging yourself by choosing a cheap energy supplier. There is also the option of connecting your own photovoltaic system. How to use your self-generated solar power to charge your vehicles. There are also many advantages for commercial use. For example, you can encourage your customers to charge their car while they shop. This extends the parking time and can attract new customers. What should I consider when buying the charging station for my electric car?Have the installation carried out by a specialist electrician.Define your equipment requirements before purchasing. Should it be possible to use it via a smartphone app? Do you want to record electricity costs and create statistics? Is access protection desired?A DC residual current detection integrated in the wall box reduces the costs of the house installation. When integrating into a photovoltaic system, please ensure that the interfaces are compatible.Wallboxes are usually not in permanent use. Therefore, the standby consumption should be as low as possible. Can the wallbox be switched off completely?Register the charging station with the network operator.Systems with more than 11 kW of power are subject to approval in Germany, for example. Please ensure that the manufacturer's declaration of conformity is available. This ensures that the device meets the requirements of your country.Good cable management including plug garage makes daily handling easier.A wall box with a socket should have a switchable locking device for the charging cable. This will prevent the charging cable from being stolen. Where should I install the wallbox?A wall box is best installed in a dry, shady place that is not exposed to direct sunlight. The ideal height should be around 1.5 to 2 meters above the ground. Make sure the area around the box is clear of obstacles. Depending on the installation location, the question of the correct cable length arises. It should be noted that power consumption and the associated costs increase with longer cables. Line losses may occur if the cable is too long. The recommended cable length for wall boxes is 10 meters. This is the optimal length to avoid losses and keep power consumption low.DangerThe requirements and standards that must be observed when connecting a charging station for electric cars can be very extensive. You should therefore commission a specialist electrician to do this.If you need a longer cable, you should consult an electrician. He is able to dimension the cable correctly and ensure that no losses occur.Do I need a separate charging station for my e-bike or pedelec? You can charge e-bikes and pedelecs at a classic household socket. If you live in your own house, this is possible in the garage, in the carport or in the basement. We recommend using a charging station if you regularly want to charge more than one bike at the same time. So the bikes are always in a designated place. The distribution of the wheels to several sockets in different rooms is no longer necessary. As a landlord, you can also offer your tenants the charging of their electric bicycles. As a rule, you do not have a publicly accessible socket in the underground car park or in the hallway. A charging station is a suitable alternative before the occupants of your house have to carry the electric bike into the apartment. Depending on the model, individual billing or locking of the charging points is possible.Which wall box is right for me?There are a number of factors to consider when choosing the right charging station. On the one hand, the power of the charging station should be matched to the required charging power of the vehicle. On the other hand, it is important to choose the fuse for the circuit and the dimensioning of the cable accordingly. TIP:The required charging power of a vehicle is usually specified in the operating instructions. For an electric car with a battery capacity of 40 kWh, for example, a charging capacity of 11 kW may be sufficient. Faster charging is possible if the charging station has a higher power. You can usually charge an electric car with a battery capacity of 60 kWh at a charging station with 22 kW. Circuit protection is important to prevent damage to the vehicle or charging station. The recommended fuse for a wall box with 3.7 kW power is 16 A. For a wall box with 11 kW power, the recommended fuse is 32 A and 22 kW power must be fused with 64 A. The dimensioning of the cable depends on the length of the cable and the desired charging power. For example, a 1.5 mm² cable is sufficient for a charging capacity of 3.7 kW. At least 6 mm² is recommended for a charging capacity of 11 kW. The number of charging points depends on the number of vehicles that are to be charged at the same time. If you want to charge several vehicles at the same time, there must be a separate charging point for each vehicle. The power of the charging station is divided among the vehicles. Dimension a new charging station for the future. Lay cables with a cross-section suitable for 22 kW. In this way you avoid further costs if you later buy a vehicle with a quick charging function. How do I calculate the charging time of my electric vehicle? The charging time of an electric vehicle depends on various factors, such as the battery capacity, the charging power and the discharge current. The battery capacity indicates how much electricity the vehicle's battery can store. The charging power is the maximum charging current with which the battery is charged. The discharge current is the maximum current at which the battery can be discharged. To calculate the charging time of an electric vehicle, divide the battery capacity in kilowatt hours (kWh) by the charging power in kilowatts (kW).Image: ABL 1W2221 wall boxThe following example shows how to calculate the charging time of an electric vehicle: A vehicle has a battery capacity of 24 kWh. The charging power is 3 kW. In this case, it takes 8 hours to fully charge the vehicle. What does load management mean for the charging station?A distinction is made between load management within the wall box and load management within the electrical installation. Wallbox load management has the following advantages:Optimized charging performance: Load management optimizes the charging performance of your wall box. For example, you can charge your battery faster and more efficiently.Protection of the battery: Another advantage of load management is that the battery is protected. The optimized charging performance prevents the battery from being overloaded.Maximize battery life: Since load management protects both the charging power and the battery, you can maximize the life of your battery. So you can benefit from your wall box for longer. If several smart charging stations are in use, these can be integrated into a building's load management system via additional modules. This means that several electric cars can be charged at the same time with the same connected load. The available power is automatically distributed to the number of charging vehicles. Companies, car parks and hotels with several charging stations thus avoid expensive power peaks.Do I need restricted access for my Wallbox? In many cases, the Wallbox is located in public or semi-public areas. This means that it is accessible to everyone. This can pose a security risk, especially if the wallbox is not properly secured. A lockable wall box provides an additional layer of security. Unauthorized persons are prevented from accessing it, for example in a communal garage, in a hotel car park or company car park. Another option is to connect the Wallbox to an RFID system. This means that only authorized persons can open the box and use the power plug. RFID systems can be installed either on the wallbox itself or on a separate access control system.  Catalogue content:In this eibabo® catalogue Industrial socket / plug applications > Charging device E-Mobility you will find items from the following product groups:Item overview:Bike charging stationBike charging stationsCharging caseCharging stationElectric bikeElectric bikesElectromobilitySocket housingVehicle chargerfrom the following manufacturers:Manufacturer overview catalogue Charging device e-mobility:ABLGSABHagerMennekes E-MobilitySchneider ElectricSpelsbergWalther

Soft starters - Would you like to avoid suddenly occurring high starting currents when switching on an electric motor, reduce wear and tear on the motor and thus extend its service life? Find out here how a soft starter works and which criteria you can use to select such a device. What is a soft starter?Soft starters, soft starters or soft starters can basically be used in all electric motors. The devices are used in particular for asynchronous motors that are operated with alternating current. The starters work according to the fact that the torque developed by the electric motor is proportional to the square of the starting current and, correspondingly, proportional to the applied voltage. Thus, with a soft starter, by reducing the voltage at the moment the motor starts, you can adjust the torque and current. So, the task of these devices is to keep the motor parameters (current, voltage, torque and so on) within safe limits during the start. This is done to:to relieve the engine drive train when startingto limit the inrush currentto avoid a voltage drop in the mains voltageprevent the miniature circuit breaker in the circuit from responding too quicklyprevent engine overheatingEliminate dropouts and irregularities in the course of the mechanical driveextend engine life What is an asynchronous motor? To understand the importance of soft starters, we need to know something about the motors they are used in. Electric motors run on either direct current or alternating current. When it comes to AC motors, we mainly differentiate between asynchronous motors and synchronous motors. The difference between the two motor variants lies in the detailed design and the interaction between the rotor and stators in the magnetic field generated.Already knew?In a synchronous motor, the rotor speed is always equal to the rotational frequency of the electromagnetic field. In an asynchronous motor, there is a difference between the rotational speeds of the rotor and the rotating magnetic field in the stator.Asynchronous motors of small and medium power are the most commonly used electric motors and are used both in industry and in household appliances. In the industrial environment, three-phase asynchronous motors are used most frequently, for example as drives in construction, in traffic, in public utilities or as drives for water supply devices. The main problems of these engines are:the high starting current, which can be many times higher than the nominal current and thus leads to problems with the performance stabilitythe inevitable difference between engine torque and load torque. When switching on, the torque is often available in fractions of a second. This sudden force can lead to failure of the drive train. A soft starter avoids these problems by slowing the acceleration and deceleration of the motor. As a result, starting currents can be reduced and irregularities in the mechanical part of the drive as well as hydraulic shocks in lines and valves when starting and stopping the motors can be avoided. What is the starting current? The principle of operation of asynchronous motors is based on electromagnetic induction. The build-up of a back EMF from the application of a changing magnetic field during engine start-up causes transients in the electrical system. Definition transientTransients in electric motors are brief voltage peaks caused by switching on the electrical circuit. These transients can affect power supplies and other connected devices. When starting, the engine accelerates to full speed. Meanwhile, the starting current can reach many times the full load current. During this time, the cables must carry more current than when they are running. The voltage drop in the system is also much greater when starting up. This becomes especially clear when starting a powerful power unit or a large number of engines at once. This is why soft starters are increasingly being used when starting high-performance electric drives. The function of the starters is to supply voltage to the motor windings evenly from zero to nominal, which also allows the motor to accelerate smoothly to maximum speed. During the starting process, the soft starter gradually increases the applied voltage and the electric motor accelerates to the nominal speed without high torque peaks and current surges. How a soft starter worksYou have now learned about the main problems involved in starting induction motors. Soft starters counteract these problems and can be either mechanical or electrical or a combination of both. Mechanical soft starters directly counteract the sudden increase in engine speed by limiting the torque, for example, with brake pads, fluid couplings, magnetic locks or counterweights. The electrically constructed devices gradually increase the current or voltage from an initially low level to a maximum voltage. This starts the motor smoothly and gradually accelerates it to its rated speed. These starters usually work with an amplitude control and can therefore also start up when idling or under load. Devices of the newer generation use phase control methods and also start drives with heavy starting.Image: Siemens 3RW4037-1BB04 soft starterWhat types of soft starters are there?Soft starters are phase controlled. Thus, three types of soft starters are used: devices with one, two and with all controlled phases. The first variant is applied to single-phase motors to provide reliable protection against overload and overheating, as well as to reduce the effects of electromagnetic interference. The devices of the second type usually contain a bypass contactor in addition to the semiconductor control board. After the motor has reached rated speed, the bypass contactor is activated and supplies DC voltage to the motor. The three-phase type is the optimal and most technically advanced solution. It provides reliable current and magnetic field strength limitation without phase distortion. What should you consider when buying a soft starter? The main feature of a soft starter is the current rating. This value should be 'many times' greater than the value of the current flowing through the motor winding. How high this 'multiple' is depends on the severity of the launch. When it comes to motors for fans or pumps, the starting current is about three times higher than the rated current. Certain saws or press machines are often devices with heavy starting. These are drives with a large moment of inertia. Their starting current is about five times higher than the rated current. For motors with particularly difficult starting, the starting current can be eight to ten times higher. Please noteA soft start takes time and excess energy is converted into heat. To repeat the starting process, the starters must cool down. Therefore, if your process requires frequent switching on and off, choose a soft starter for heavy or extra heavy starting (even if your machine doesn't actually need it).Decide on a device that controls the required number of phases. In addition, a soft starter works according to a preset program. In other words: The device increases the voltage to the nominal value within a certain time. An integrated control unit with feedback function allows you to control this process and compare voltage and torque or the differences between rotor and stator. If necessary, pay attention to the ability of the starter to work when accelerating or braking. This would require an additional, integrated auxiliary contactor that bridges the main circuit so that it can cool down. This prevents phase asymmetry and overheating of the motor windings. With some models, you can set certain parameters manually using a rotary potentiometer on the device or digitally using a microcontroller. Consider whether you need additional functionality or features. These include:a certain type of protectionthe presence of power saving modesrestart capabilityWorking at reduced speed  TIPA properly selected soft starter can double the service life of electric motors and save up to 30 percent electricity. With a soft starter from the eibabo® online shop, you are opting for high-quality goods from well-known manufacturers such as Eaton, Schneider, ABB or Siemens. If you want to control the speed of a machine not only at the beginning, but permanently, then the use of a frequency converter would be an alternative for you. Frequency converters are also available here in the online shop at top conditions.  Catalogue content:In this eibabo® catalogue Low-voltage industrial components > Soft starter you will find items from the following product groups:Item overview:Direct soft starterDirect starterDrive technologyEngine starterPerformance starterSoft startSoft starterStarting deviceTorque controlfrom the following manufacturers:Manufacturer overview catalogue Soft starters:ABBDoldEatonFrankoniaKalejaRockwellSchneider ElectricSiemens
