What are the advantages and disadvantages of an LED lamp?

An LED lamp is a rather complex electronic device with dozens of details that affect the quality of light, safety and lifespan of the lamp. There are numerous differences compared to classic incandescent lamps and the modern compact fluorescent lamps (energy-saving lamps). These have some advantages, but also come with a few disadvantages.

The main advantage of LED lamps is energy saving. With the same light output, the LED lamp consumes 7 to 10 times less electricity than a conventional incandescent lamp.


 

Other differences are:

  • Durability - the LED bulb lasts 15x to 50x longer
  • Less heat development - the lamp usually does not get that hot
  • LED lamps shine with the same brightness despite the lower mains voltage
  • Installation – lower power consumption allows installation in a power-limited luminaire
  • The light from modern LED lamps is optically comparable to that of conventional incandescent lamps

 

Compared to compact fluorescent lamps (energy-saving lamps), there are the following advantages:

  • Environmental friendliness - LED lamps do not contain any hazardous substances such as mercury.
  • Economy – The LED lamp consumes less energy with the same luminous flux.
  • In contrast to the compact fluorescent lamp, the LED lamp lights up immediately with full brightness.
  • Compact fluorescent lamps have an unnatural light spectrum. The light spectrum of an LED lamp is much closer to natural light.

 

But there are also disadvantages:

  • The price of an LED lamp can be higher than other lamps.
  • Due to the complex structure, numerous products of poor quality are on the market.
  • Not all models support dimming.
  • The performance specifications of some manufacturers deviate from the actual performance.

 

Briefly on the history of the LED

The history of the LED begins as early as 1907. British engineer Henry Joseph Round first observed the formation of a point of light when direct current is passed through a silicon carbide point contact connection. In 1924, it was Oleg Vladimirovich Losev who investigated this effect in more detail and then constructed the first light-emitting diode (LED). After initial research, Losew proposed concrete theories of how it works and later used them in practical applications. Based on this, red, yellow, green and blue LEDs were developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Subsequently, white LED light sources were created from the combination of red, green and blue. In the 1990s, the first white LEDs appeared, which used a special chemical to convert the light from a blue or ultraviolet LED into white light.

What types of LED lamps are there?

As already mentioned, the range of offers is very wide. LEDs are not only available as individual components for self-assembly, but also in the form of strips, tubes or panels. What are COB LEDs?

COB LEDs are multiple LED chips that are grouped and bonded together by the manufacturer to form a single module. As a result, the chips are smaller and can be installed closer together. The LED chips are mounted directly in contact with a substrate such as silicon carbide or sapphire. This achieves a significantly higher lumen density in a smaller space. COB technology also uses a single circuit design with only two contacts, no matter how many chips are involved. And what does this mean? In contrast to other LED light sources, there are no longer any transitions in the light from one LED to the next. A uniformly luminous field of any shape and size is created.

The term COB

COB is the abbreviation for 'Chip on Board'. This means that the chips are attached directly to a carrier substrate and therefore fewer components are required per LED chip for proper operation. Along with eliminating the otherwise common LED chip structure packaging, less heat is generated and higher installation density is achieved.


This technology made it possible, for example, to produce flexible and yet optically uninterrupted light strips. The filaments in the currently very popular 'Edison light bulbs' are also based on COB technology.

What characteristics should I look out for when buying LED lamps?

There are numerous parameters that can influence the purchase of an LED lamp. Let's take a closer look at some of them:

The luminous flux / luminous flux

The luminous flux is given in lumens and is the total amount of light that the lamp emits in a certain time. The more lumens, the brighter the lamp.

the frequency

Natural light sources shone evenly, like candles or the sun. Many electric light sources do not emit an even, but a pulsating light. At a frequency of 50 Hz, the light 'flickers' 50 times per second. Even if we are not consciously aware of this, our body registers the pulsation and may react with discomfort, tiredness and even malaise. Light with a frequency above 300 Hz has no noticeable effect on the human body. So pay attention to the highest possible frequency.

The color temperature

LED lamps are available in different light color temperatures. These are given in Kelvin, for example:

  • 1800K - Candlelight
  • 2600K - warm light like incandescent bulbs
  • 3000K - warm white comfortable light
  • 5000K - neutral white daylight
  • 6000K - Cool White Light

 

White and cool white light is said to increase concentration and efficiency, while warm light promotes relaxation. Warm lighting is recommended so that you can fully relax and fall asleep better after coming home from work. Color temperatures of around 3000 Kelvin are suitable for everyday household routines. It can be daylight to work.

In addition to the main parameters, it is important to note some other characteristics of LED lamps. These would be:

  • Illumination angle – width of the cone of light illuminating a given area
  • Operating voltage – Most LED lamps are designed for a mains voltage of 230 V, lamps with GU5.3 and G4 sockets are also available for 12 volts
  • Energy Consumption - Typically, the wattage of the lamps is in the range of 1.5 watts to 15 watts. However, this says nothing about the actual brightness. This is given in lumens (see above)
  • Dimmability – There are dimmable and non-dimmable models. Many dimmable LED lamps do not dim completely, but only to 15% to 20% of full brightness. This depends not only on the lamp, but also on the dimmer.
  • Dimensions - When choosing lamps, don't forget the overall dimensions. LED lamps are sometimes significantly larger than the corresponding light bulbs. As a result, a bulb may not fit into the lamp or protrude.
  • Service life – The service life is mostly given as between 10,000 and 50,000 hours. Be aware that these are theoretical values.
  • Guarantee period - The longer the manufacturer gives a guarantee on a lamp, the more likely it is that it will be of the highest quality.
  • Date of Manufacture – Technology is evolving rapidly. If lamps have been stored for a long time, you will surely find better models from more recent productions.

The indication of the power equivalent to an incandescent lamp is no longer up-to-date (e.g. 'corresponds to 40W') and is also becoming less and less relevant as technology continues to improve. Instead, select your lamp based on the lumen specification.
